Choose one of the three thirds to cast. While on the stack, only the chosen third’s characteristics apply. While not on the stack, the card has the combined characteristics of all three thirds (including combined mana value and three names). The card is a single card for counting purposes.

This is a split card with three separate thirds, each an Instant — Lesson. When you cast it, you choose exactly one of those thirds to cast. While the spell is on the stack, only the chosen third’s text, mana cost, mana value, name, and other characteristics apply. The other two thirds are ignored while the spell is being cast and while it’s on the stack. When the card is not on the stack (in hand, library, graveyard, exile, etc.), it has combined characteristics of all three thirds: for example, its mana value is the combined mana values of the three thirds, and it has three names. The card is still a single card physically, so any effect that counts cards treats it as one card. If an effect asks you to choose or name a card, you may choose one of the three names but not multiple names. If an effect lets you cast a spell from a zone by matching certain characteristics, consider only the characteristics of the third you intend to cast—for instance, if the allowance is limited to mana value 2 or less, you may only cast a third whose mana value is 2 or less.

When allowed to cast a card with specific characteristics from a zone, checking the combined characteristics rather than the chosen third’s characteristics; you must use the third you plan to cast to determine legality.

Playtest cards use a modified version of game symbols, such as {T} and {W}. These modified symbols should be treated as the standard symbols during play.

Each split card is a single card. For example, if you discard a split card, you’ve discarded one card. If an effect counts the number of instant and sorcery cards in your graveyard, There // They’re // Their counts once, not three times.

To cast this split card, choose one of its thirds to cast. The characteristics of the thirds you didn’t cast are ignored while the spell is on the stack.

For many playtest cards, you’ll need to make a generous assumption that basic game rules would be updated to allow them to work. The Mystery Booster 2 Playtest Card Notes section (reproduced here in individual Gatherer rulings) provides guidance for fitting these cards into the existing rules structure.

Playtest cards aren’t legal for play in any tournament format other than Mystery Booster Limited formats. On the other hand, we expect they will spice up a wide variety of non-tournament games (as long as everyone’s on the same page about using them!).

This split card’s characteristics are a combination of its three thirds while it’s not on the stack. For example, There // They’re // Their has a mana value of 6 while it’s in your library. If an effect allows you to search your library for a card with mana value 4 or less, you can’t find There // They’re // Their.
