Lodestone Needle is the front face (an artifact) with a craft ability that can exile cards or permanents you control as the cost; when you pay that cost and the craft ability resolves, you create (put onto the battlefield) the back face, Guidestone Compass. Any cards exiled as part of that craft cost are considered the materials "used to craft" Guidestone Compass as long as they remain exiled and the crafted Compass remains on the battlefield. You may exile tokens you control to help pay the materials requirement, but because tokens aren’t cards and typically won’t remain in exile, they won’t be considered "used to craft" for later references. If some of the exiled objects were taken from both permanents you control and cards in your graveyard, that’s allowed; you don’t have to exile all materials from the same zone. Guidestone Compass may have abilities that check or refer to the cards exiled when it was crafted; those references only apply while those cards remain exiled. The rulings also explain how "explore" works if any of the abilities on the card cause a creature (or sometimes another permanent) to explore: reveal the top card of that creature’s controller’s library; if it’s a land, put it into that player’s hand; otherwise the creature gets a +1/+1 counter and that player chooses to either leave the revealed card on top of the library or put it into their graveyard. If the creature left the battlefield after the instruction to explore was made but before it resolved, it still explores. If the library is empty so no card is revealed, the exploring creature still gets a +1/+1 counter.

Front face (Lodestone Needle) and back face (Guidestone Compass) are two halves of a transforming double-faced card; craft is an activated ability on the front that can exile cards as part of its cost to create the back face.
When you activate craft, you may exile cards from your hand, graveyard, and/or permanents you control to pay the materials requirement; tokens you control may be exiled but aren’t cards and won’t remain in exile, so they won’t count as "used to craft" for later references.
Cards exiled as the cost of craft are considered "used to craft" the back face as long as they remain exiled and the crafted permanent remains on the battlefield, even if control or characteristics of that permanent change.
Lodestone Needle’s ETB ability targets up to one artifact or creature. You may target a tapped permanent; entering tapped doesn't prevent placing stun counters on it.
Guidestone Compass’s abilities (the back face) refer to the cards exiled when it was crafted; if those exiled cards are no longer in exile, those references don't apply.
When an ability causes a creature to explore, its controller reveals the top card of their library: if it’s a land, that player puts it into their hand; otherwise the creature gets a +1/+1 counter and that player chooses to leave the revealed card on top of their library or put it into their graveyard.
If an instruction to make a specific creature explore resolves but that creature has left the battlefield, it still explores (it’s a resolved instruction). If no card is revealed because the library is empty, the exploring creature still gets a +1/+1 counter.
Noncreature permanents can sometimes explore (if an effect causes them to); they follow the same procedure, and if a noncreature permanent is revealed as nonland it can still get a +1/+1 counter.
If an effect causes multiple explores in a row, you may reveal the same nonland card multiple times if it was left on top of the library between explores.

The back faces of some cards with craft refer to cards "used to craft" it. This refers to the cards exiled as part of the cost of the craft ability of the front face. Those cards are considered to be "used to craft" that permanent as long as they remain exiled and the permanent remains on the battlefield, even if the permanent's controller changes or some of its characteristics change (because of a copy effect, for example.)

You may exile tokens you control as part of the materials required. However, because they aren't cards and won't stay in exile, any abilities that refer to what you "used to craft" the back faces won't refer to anything.

If a resolving spell or ability instructs a specific creature to explore but that creature has left the battlefield, the creature still explores. If you reveal a nonland card this way, you won't put a +1/+1 counter on anything, but you may put the revealed card into your graveyard. Effects that trigger "whenever a creature explores" trigger as appropriate.

In some unusual cases, noncreature permanents may explore. For example, if the creature card returned by Defossilize is somehow not a creature once it's on the battlefield, it can still explore. You'll take all the same actions, and you may end up putting a +1/+1 counter on the permanent. (Note that some effects target a creature, and those effects would still require a legal target to have it explore.)

If a card that isn't a transforming double-faced card becomes a copy of a card with craft, it'll stay in exile if you activate the craft ability. It won't return to the battlefield.

If no card is revealed, most likely because that player's library is empty, the exploring creature receives a +1/+1 counter.

Some spells or abilities might cause a creature to explore multiple times in a row. If you reveal a nonland card when a creature explores and leave it on top of your library, then the creature explores again immediately afterwards, you'll reveal the same card again.
