If you cast Pie-Eating Contest without paying its mana cost, you can still choose any value for X and choose targets accordingly because the X isn’t in the mana cost.

Wyjaśnienie po polsku
Zawody w jedzeniu ciast (Pie-Eating Contest)
Czar — Sorcery
Jako dodatkowy koszt rzucenia tego czaru, pochłoń X. (Za każdym razem, gdy pochłaniasz, weź kęs jedzenia albo poświęć żeton Jedzenia.)
X wskazanych stworów, które kontrolujesz, każde otrzymuje +2/+2 i zyskuje przebicie do końca tury.
X wskazanych stworów, które kontrolujesz, każde otrzymuje +2/+2 i zyskuje przebicie do końca tury.
Jak działa karta?
Zapłać dodatkowy koszt „pochłonięcia” X razy, potem daj +2/+2 i przebicie X twoim stworom do końca tury.
- Mylenie „pochłonięcia” z płaceniem many — pochłonięcie to zjedzenie kęsa lub poświęcenie żetonu Jedzenia, nie koszt many.
- Próba poświęcenia pojedynczego żetonu Jedzenia dla kilku pochłonięć — wszystkie żetony Jedzenia poświęcane są jednocześnie i każdy poświęcony żeton pokrywa jedno pochłonięcie.
Przykład
Rzucasz Zawody w jedzeniu ciast z X=3, poświęcasz dwa żetony Jedzenia i bierzesz jeden kęs z talerza; trzy wskazane stwory dostają +2/+2 i przebicie do końca tury.

All Food tokens are sacrificed at the same time. All bites of food are taken one at a time. (Can you even take two bites of food at the same time? Isn’t that just a larger bite?) You are allowed to swallow between bites. In fact, we encourage it!
Gum isn’t food. Trust us on this one.
You choose the value of X as you’re casting Pie-Eating Contest.
