Ki counters are a type of counter that are placed on Petalmane Baku by its triggered ability when you cast a Spirit or Arcane spell. You choose whether to put a counter each time the trigger happens.
The activated ability has two parts in its cost: pay and remove X ki counters from Petalmane Baku. You choose the value of X as you activate the ability, and you must remove exactly that many counters as part of the cost.
When you activate the ability, the amount of mana produced equals X and all that mana must be of a single color you choose as the ability resolves. For example, if you remove 3 counters, you add three mana, all of the same color (e.g., ).
You can activate the ability multiple times as long as you can pay and there are enough ki counters to remove each time.
If Petalmane Baku leaves the battlefield or changes so it no longer has the removed counters, that does not undo the payment; costs (including removing counters) are paid as the activation is put on the stack.
If you choose X = 0 when activating the ability (allowed but usually pointless), you must still pay . Removing zero counters removes no counters and the ability will add zero mana when it resolves.

Ki counters are placed only by that triggered ability; other effects that add or remove counters interact normally with them if they refer to counter types or a generic 'counters'.
