Double strike: creates two combat damage steps — this creature deals and can be dealt damage twice each combat it is attacking or blocking.
Whenever this creature becomes the target of a spell you control, it connives: when that triggered ability resolves, you draw a card, then discard a card. If the discarded card is a nonland card, put a +1/+1 counter on this creature.
If no card is discarded (for example because your hand is empty or a replacement effect prevents discarding), you cannot get the +1/+1 counter.
If the creature leaves the battlefield after the trigger is put on the stack but before the connive resolves, the connive effect still happens; you still draw and discard, but if you discard a nonland card you won't put a +1/+1 counter on anything because the creature is no longer on the battlefield.
While the connive effect is resolving, players cannot take other actions. That means once you discard a nonland card during that resolution, opponents cannot remove the creature before it gets the counter.

If no card is discarded, most likely because that player's hand is empty and an effect says they can't draw cards, the conniving creature does not receive a +1/+1 counter.

If a resolving spell or ability instructs a specific creature to connive but that creature has left the battlefield, the creature still connives. If you discard a nonland card this way, you won't put a +1/+1 counter on anything. Abilities that trigger “when [that creature] connives” will trigger.

Once an ability that causes a creature to connive begins to resolve, no player may take any other actions until it's done. Notably, opponents can't try to remove the conniving creature after you discard a nonland card but before it receives a counter.
